One of our founding principles is that the students must desire to be a part of the Makarios community. Without their personal buy-in, the educational model fails. The key is to help the students discover their passion. In an earlier blog this year, I shared how I had come full circle in trusting the instincts of my own children’s innate curiosity to live a lifestyle of learning. Makarios mentors model a lifestyle of learning everyday through short lectures and experiments that peak the interest of students from 5 to 15 (our oldest student this year). Mentors meet monthly to discuss what we are learning and sharing as well as what we have observed in our students over the previous weeks. We plan and strategize about how to engage students that have yet to discover a topic or subject that they become so engrossed in that it’s difficult to put it down at the end of the day.
